The Wind in Our Breath

Inuit throat singing is uniquely Canadian and is sung in two different styles called Katadjaq from Nunavik and south Baffin and Qiaqvaaq from Kivalliq and high Baffin.To celebrate National Aboriginal Day, we are presenting twelve throat singers who will share their distinct Inuit tradition.

Johnny Issaluk

Johnny has been a regular at the Alianait Arts Festival, dazzling audiences with his incredible physical strength, agility and endurance. Johnny is a famous Inuit athlete from Chesterfield Inlet who has represented Nunavut at 5 Arctic Winter Games.

Inuksuk Drum Dancers

Led by Music Teacher, Mary Piercey, this all girl ensemble was formed in the Fall of 2008 and performs traditional Inuktitut and contemporary songs, Inuit drum dances and throat songs. Mary is a PhD candidate in Ethnomusicology at Memorial University and spent 5 years teaching music at Qitiqliq High School in Arviat prior to moving to Iqaluit.  The Inuksuk Drum Dancers has been dazzling Iqaluit audiences all year, most recently at the Toonik Tyme Opening Ceremonies and the Nunavut Trade Show.

Nuvu

Nuvu is an eclectic ensemble made up of Iqaluit musicians peforming original music. The principal singer and songwriter is Ellen Hamilton who founded the popular folk band Night Sun in Iqaluit almost 20 years ago. Nuvu features Ellen (vocals, guitar) along with Chris Coleman (clarinet, mandolin, guitar), Rob Aube (bass), Jamal Shirley (guitar) and Leena Evic (vocals).
