Aaju Peter

Born in Arkisserniaq, a northern Greenland community in 1960, Aaju has lived up and down the west coast of her native country as a result of her father’s teaching and preaching career. In 1971, at the age of 11, Aaju was sent to go to school in Denmark. She moved back to Greenland in 1978, and then relocated to Iqaluit in 1981. Here, Aaju raised her five children, went to school to study the Inuit language and culture, and volunteered for women’s organizations as interpreter.

Currently Aaju has a homebased sealskin garment business, interprets, volunteers for community events, collects traditional law from elders, was called to the Nunavut Bar in 2008 and travels nationally and internationally to speak about Inuit right to make a living on seal and sealskin products and promotes Inuit participation on all talks about the Northwest Passage.

Aaju is also an accomplished musician and released her first CD ‘We Are Inuit’ in 2008.

Sweet Ptarmageddon

Sweet Ptarmageddon is comprised of Emily Woods and Katie Hunter,who will be joined in this debut performance by Iqaluit musicians Mark McCormack, Rob Aube and Seth Reinhart. Detroit-born singer Emily Woods’ developed a love for jazz as a wee girl when she would sing along as her father played soprano sax. Emily began performing in clubs and bars in her early teens. Since she moved to Iqaluit in 2006, she’s been active in the local music scene, singing jazz, blues and most recently, R&B, as well as lending a helping hand organizing musical events, including the Alianait Arts Festival.
Katie Hunter began taking classical piano lessons in Vancouver at the age of six and studied into her late teens. She later attended the music program in Nelson BC where she met her piano mentor and close friend, Glennn Mitchell. Katie began studying exclusively with Glennn, and playing R&B and blues with musicians from the college. After moving to Iqaluit last year, she has had the pleasure of meeting and playing with a growing group of wonderful musicians.

Italian-born Quebec musician Marco Calliari is well known on the Canadian music scene, having performed for 15 years as a member of the Montreal metal group Anonymus.  A couple of years ago, he revealed a new side of his talent and musicianship with the release of Che la vita, a collection of Italian songs inspired by his culltural folklore and other influences, ranging from jazz to worldbeat.

Calliari won the CBC-sponsored Galaxie Award at the Rouyn-Noranda Emerging Music Festival and was featured at the Ritalfest, celebrating Italian music in Quebec. He also received a nomination in the “cosmopolitan” album category of the 2005 MIMI (Montreal International Music Initiative) Awards.
