Maanilu Asianilu is a project which started in Kangiqsujuaq, a remote community in northern Nunavik, through the initiative of a group of teenagers. With the help of their teacher, Cathy Archambault, the youth organized a trip to Gaspé, Québec in the summer of 2007 to perform traditional Inuit music at the Gaspé World Music Festival. One of the bands performing at the Festival was Kilombo, a Brazilian percussion band, and the youth were fascinated by the music and convinced their teacher to bring Kilombo’s band leader, Rémi Giguère, to fly to their northern community to help them start a band. One year later, Maanilu Asianilu was featured as a Brazilian percussion band at the Gaspé World Music Festival.
Since then, the band has also performed at many events in Kangiqsujuaq, and at the Snow Festival in Puvirnituq.
